Germany, Hamburg 5/100 Verrechnungsmark 1923 - NGC MS62

GERMANY. Hamburg. 5/100 Verrechnungsmark. 1923. - Value: 5/100 Verrechnungsmark. - Year: 1923. - Inscriptions: Obverse: GEBRAUCHT MIT GENEHMIGUNG DES SENATS. Reverse: HAMBURGISCHE BANK VON 1619 AG · 5/100 VERRECHNUNGS-MARKE · 1923. - Grade: MS62 (NGC). Coin of 5/100 Verrechnungsmark issued by Hamburgische Bank AG during the German hyperinflation crisis of 1923. The obverse bears the coat of arms of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, supported by two rampant lions and crowned, accompanied by the inscription indicating its issuance with the Senate of the city’s authorization. The reverse shows the face value in the center, surrounded by the issuing entity’s legend and the minting year. The design, with a sober and functional style, reflects the fiduciary character of these compensatory pieces used during a period of extraordinary monetary instability. The specimen preserves well-defined reliefs, uniform fields and an original satin finish with light contact marks typical of mint-state conservation, fully consistent with the MS62 grade awarded by NGC. These coins constitute an interesting numismatic testimony of the solutions adopted by local financial institutions to maintain commercial transactions during the hyperinflation that affected Germany in 1923.
