All auctions / Books, Maps & Manuscripts / Germany - Ingolstadt and the Swedish siege of 1632.; Matthaus Merian d

Original historical copper engraving titled Ingolstadium, after the depiction by Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593–1650). The print shows Ingolstadt during the siege by Swedish troops in 1632, during the Thirty Years' War. The town, churches, fortifications, military camps and the Danube are depicted in detail and accompanied by historical place designations. The engraving is attributed to Merian's Theatrum Europaeum, the extensive illustrated chronicle that describes events from European history. The series appeared in several parts and editions from 1633 onwards. Comparable copies are dated in antiquarian catalogs from roughly 1633 to 1646. A decorative and historically interesting print for collectors of old maps, city views, and seventeenth‑century military history.
