Bronze sculpture in lost-wax technique with a dark patina, depicting a female bust with a bead or scarf head-covering, by the Italian sculptor Gesualdo Gatti (1855-1893), executed in the last quarter of the 19th century. The composition presents a veristic setting with orientalizing touches and an early transition toward Liberty / Art Nouveau, characterized by a fluid modeling of the head-covering and a plastic definition of the facial features. The casting rests on a two-tier rectangular onyx base with veining. The inscribed signature "Gatti" is present, incised directly on the rear edge of the sculpture. CONDITIONS: The object is in overall excellent condition. The surface is intact with a uniform dark patina and minimal signs of abrasion. The onyx base shows no chips or structural damage. The original metal clamping screw is anchored inside by adhesive, with the lower bolt replaced at a later date; the figure is firmly positioned on the resting surface in a static pose, with a slight shift if manually disturbed. MEASUREMENTS AND WEIGHT: Total dimensions with base: height 22.8 cm x 18 cm x 11.9 cm. Bronze-only dimensions: height 19.7 cm x 14 cm x 13 cm approx. Total weight: 3587 g. CONTEXT: Gesualdo Gatti (1855-1893), formed within the Italian sculpture milieu of the latter half of the 19th century, is documented for a heterogeneous production including realistic portraits, female figures in traditional or exotic costume, and animalier subjects. His creations also entered the Paris market of the period, sometimes cast by renowned French manufactories.
