This 1863 oil on canvas stands as a premier example of early West Coast maritime painting by Gideon Jacques Denny. Infused with the dramatic hallmarks of the Romantic realist movement, the canvas captures a majestic three-masted clipper ship and a nearby single-masted vessel braving a choppy, swells-filled ocean. On the distant horizon, a detailed harbor city emerges beneath a moody, atmospheric sky, while a smoking steamer traces the coastline. Celebrated for his intimate knowledge of ship anatomy, Denny rendered the intricate web of rigging with crisp precision. The reverse of the wooden stretcher bears inscriptions in dark pigment reading G J Denny 1863. This piece is presented in a gilded wood and gesso frame featuring deep scrolling leaf and flower elements. Sight size: 19.5"W x 13.5"H.
