All auctions / Arts & Graphics / Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Italian, 1720-1778), Veduta degli avanzi

Etching, 1770, from the series Vedute di Roma (Views of Rome), matted and framed. Frame dimensions 24 3/4 x 35 1/4 in. From the Estate of the Late Dr. Jesse Lamar White, Jr., Chapel Hill, North Carolina Giovanni Battista Piranesi began his monumental Vedute di Roma (Views of Rome) series in the late 1740s, producing more than 130 large-scale etchings of the city’s ancient monuments and contemporary architecture over the course of his career. Combining precise architectural observation with dramatic perspective, deep shadows, and exaggerated scale, Piranesi presented Rome as both an archaeological record and a powerful imaginative landscape. Widely collected by travelers on the Grand Tour, Vedute di Roma helped shape European perceptions of Rome and became one of the most influential architectural series of the eighteenth century. Very good condition; with slight center crease as issued; not examined out of frame.
