Giovanni Contardi - Rubik's Cube Mosaic - 'Wariness'

Artist: Giovanni Contardi Title: Wariness Year: 2026 Medium: Rubik’s Cube mosaic (wall sculpture) Materials: 64 original Rubik’s Cubes, MDF panel, archival industrial adhesive Dimensions: 45.8 × 45.8 × 7.8 cm Edition: Unique work Signature: Hand-signed on the reverse Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity with an archival hologram. Ready to hang. Professionally packed for shipping. In ‘Wariness’, a tightly cropped face fills the composition, bringing the viewer into an unusually close encounter with the figure. The gaze seems directed outward, creating the impression that the viewer is being observed in return. The expression carries a quiet sense of unease and caution, creating a subtle tension between physical proximity and emotional distance. The lateral view reveals the adjacent faces of the cubes, extending the chromatic structure beyond the frontal image and emphasizing the sculptural depth of the work. Giovanni Contardi (b. 1994) is an Italian artist internationally recognised for his mosaics created entirely from original Rubik’s Cubes. His installations are permanently exhibited at the Rossini National Museum in Italy and at Disney Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel at Disneyland Paris. His work was mentioned by Ernő Rubik, inventor of the Rubik’s Cube, in his autobiographical book Cubed: The Puzzle of Us All (2020).
