Giovanni Francesco Barbieri detto il Guercino (1591-1666)

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino (1591–1666) Saint Mary of Egypt (Mary Magdalene, Memento Mori) 1630–1660 Oil on canvas An interesting antique painting depicting Saint Mary of Egypt, portrayed in a penitential attitude, with hands joined and gaze directed upward. The figure is built through a strong contrast between the illuminated areas of the flesh and the dark tones of the background, in a fully 17th-century pictorial language. On the back of the work there is a handwritten label bearing the following attribution: "Giovanni Francesco Barbieri known as Guercino 1630–1660" A second label reads: "Saint Mary of Egypt – Restored in 1996 – Frame of 1996". The canvas presents a painted surface with a patina consistent with the stated age and signs of time. On the back a restoration carried out in 1996 is documented. The work is set in a gilded frame made in 1996, as indicated by the label on the back. Dimensions of the painting: about 64 × 51 cm Overall dimensions with frame: about 68 × 55 cm Technique: oil on canvas Indicated period: 1630–1660 Subject: Saint Mary of Egypt Restoration: 1996 Frame: 1996 From a private collection, purchased by an antiquarian in Florence in the late 80s NO SHIPPING USA UK SWITZERLAND
