Giulio Ferrario - Giulio Ferrario – Il Costume Antico e Moderno – Europa

Giulio Ferrario – Il Costume Antico e Moderno – Europe, Band IX, Part II – Florence 1829 – 60 Hand-Colored Plates Offered is a richly illustrated copy from Giulio Ferrario’s monumental work on culture and costume history, “Il Costume Antico e Moderno,” here Europe, Volume IX, Part II, in the second, revised and expanded edition, published in 1829 by Vincenzo Batelli in Florence. Two Place of publication: Florence Publisher: Vincenzo Batelli Year: 1829 Language: Italian Extent: Text up to p. 488, followed by index of contents and plates Plates: 60 hand-colored plates (Plate XLI–C) according to the original plate list contained in the volume; including numerous large-format or fold-out plates. Content and plates The volume deals mainly with the history and culture of the Germanic/Central European region from antiquity through the Middle Ages to modern times. Topics include government and law, religion, customs and manners, military, sciences, art, architecture, and social life. The particular strength of this copy lies in its extensive collection of 60 hand-colored plates. They illustrate an unusually wide range: historical costumes and armor, rulers and dignitaries, medieval seals and coins, orders and decorations, religious and archaeological objects, architecture, tournaments, military uniforms, cavalry, peasant costumes and everyday scenes, as well as views of Austrian buildings. Especially decorative are the large fold-out plates with tournament and equestrian scenes, cavalry and military formations, as well as Austrian costumes and everyday scenes. The historical coloring on many plates remains remarkably vivid and differentiated. The original “Descrizione delle Tavole” at the end of the volume lists plates XLI to C individually, thereby documenting a total of 60 plates. The photographed plates and the plate list are part of this offer. Significance of the plate collection The distinctive collector’s and decorative value of this copy, in my assessment, lies chiefly in the 60 preserved hand-colored plates, including many large fold-outs. Individual hand-colored Ferrario sheets are offered separately in antiquarian and graphic dealers. However, prices for such individual sheets do not simply multiply by the number of plates, as selling prices depend strongly on subject matter, size, condition, and demand, and a complete bound volume is valued differently from individual graphics. For precisely this reason, the volume has not been split. The plates remain in their historical bibliographic context with the accompanying text and the original plate list. Condition The work is over 195 years old and is explicitly offered in a restoration-needing antiquarian condition. The binding, especially the spine, shows clear age and wear. There are wormholes or bite marks, partially loosened or detached pages and plates, edge damage, creases, as well as age-related stains, foxing, and paper discoloration. The large fold-out plates show the corresponding historical folds and, in part, edge or fold damage. These defects must be considered in the assessment. Counterbalancing this is a remarkable plate stock: many of the hand-colored illustrations are, despite the conservation state of the volume, still strikingly attractive face-illustration wise, with strong colors and a very decorative effect. The work is deliberately offered in its historical context and current state and not dismantled into individual plates. Important note / Private sale The book comes from my private collection and is sold by me as a private individual. The description has been prepared to the best of my knowledge based on the present copy, the title page, the contents and plate list, and visible features. With a nearly 200-year-old antiquarian work, despite careful checking, undiscovered defects, older repairs, or other age-related changes may be present. The many photographs are expressly part of the description and are decisive for the assessment of extent, preservation, coloring, and condition. Please examine the photos carefully; they show the quality of the plates as well as the existing aging, bite, binding, and usage traces. This is a private sale from my collection. The sale is made under exclusion of any liability for material defects to the extent permitted by law. No warranty and no returns. Legal liability for intentional misconduct and gross negligence, as well as for damages arising from injury to life, body, or health, remains unaffected.
