The Question of Happiness Examined by D. Giuseppe Maria Conti C.R.S. Milan, for Carlo Antonio Malatesta, 1694. Very Rare sixteenth-century first edition of this philosophical-moral treatise devoted to the analysis of happiness, examined through the main passions, qualities, and conditions of man. The author approaches the question in an erudite and Christian manner, examining the nature of happiness and its relation to the different goods sought by man. The work unfolds through a sequence of chapters devoted, among others, to the passions, love, anger, injustice, pain, the fear of death, pleasure, holiness, beauty, nobility, dignities, riches, science, virtues, and wisdom. The treatise concludes with a series of “confermazioni” aimed at consolidating the arguments developed throughout the work. Collation: [40], 286, [4] pages (Complete Work) Format: 16º (approximately 15 cm height) Provenance: An element of particular interest is the presence at the foot of the title page of the ex libris: “Ex Libris I. C. Francisci Arisij.” The ex libris can be traced to Francesco Arisi (Cremona, 1657–1743), an important scholar, historian, literary figure, and jurist from Cremona, best known for the monumental Cremona literata. The presence of the ex libris bestows the copy with a historically notable provenance, linking it to the personal library of one of the most important Cremonese scholars from the 17th to the 18th century. Contemporary binding in parchment with manuscript title on the spine State of preservation: Excellent overall condition for its age. The copy has been collated and is complete in every part. The binding is very solid and compact, with some minimal signs of wear. The leaves are generally very clean; some may show minimal traces of light foxing. The item will be packed and shipped with the utmost care and attention, using materials specifically for the shipment of antique books.
