All auctions / Jewellery & Gems / Glamorous "Drapery" Gold Necklace with Burma Rubies & Natural Pearls, 1940s

This necklace is impressively decorated. It is made of high-carat gold and is densely set with luminous rubies and shimmering natural pearls. The rubies, which total around 3.80 ct, are stones from untreated, unheated rubies from Burma, traditionally the best origin for rubies. The largest stone in the centerpiece weighs around half a carat. The motifs of the openwork pieces of jewellery mix floral shapes with expressively curved, falling motifs. The powerful design, whose details are reminiscent of stylized fabric hangings, is also known in English as "drapery jewellery". These shapes are typical of the early 1940s. The necklace was probably created in British India, where the Art Déco style was very popular at a slightly different time and, together with traditional Indian forms, found its own language. The necklace is in very good condition and is a beautiful and rare example of jewellery from this period of upheaval. We have renewed the chain so that it can be worn without worry.
