Carcharhinus plumbeus. Commonly called the gray shark, the term plumbeus indeed is a Latin word meaning "lead" or "leaden". It is one of the most widespread and studied shark species in the world. It is distinguished by its very high, triangular first dorsal fin, and by its short, rounded snout. The dorsal color ranges from gray to brown (hence the name "plumbeus"), while the belly is white. It lives in tropical and temperate waters around the world, preferring coastal bottoms and continental shelves. In Italy, it is possible to encounter it in summer near Lampione Island, in the Pelagie Islands Marine Protected Area. It feeds mainly on small bony fishes, crustaceans, and mollusks. Taxidermy is very rare and beautiful. For true collectors or lovers of oddities, the perfect item for a wunderkammer. Happy bidding.
