Very Rare N.M. Rothschild & Sons 10 Tolas "Finger" Gold Ingot Rainer Ahlers: "Very Few Examples Known" GREAT BRITAIN. Undated (1811-1970) N.M. Rothschild & Sons 10 Tolas "Finger" Gold Ingot. Ahlers-700. AU-58 (PCGS). Approximately 72 mm x 15 mm x 3 mm. 116.55 grams, .996 fine, 3.73 troy ounces AGW. All stamps are on the front face: N.M. ROTHSCHILD & SONS LONDON / 996 FINE. A lovely example of this "finger" ingot, so named because of its distinct shape. Bright medium gold surfaces show neither significant casting imperfections nor evidence of more than light, gentle handling; the few marks present are small, well scattered, and singularly inconspicuous. Writing in his excellent reference Standard Catalog of Rothschild Gold Bars: 1852-1967 (2016), Rainer Ahlers assigns bars of this type an R2 rating using the scale he developed for this series, which classification he describes as: The bar type or bar variant is commercially available very rarely and was seen for the last time a long time ago in the market. There are very few examples known. Indeed, this is the first Rothschild gold ingot of this type that your cataloger (JLA) has handled in a professional numismatic career spanning more than a quarter of a century.
