GREEK CYPRIOT BRONZE HORSE FIGURINE

Ca. 700 - 500 BC. A bronze horse stands firmly on four separated legs, with a compact barrel-shaped body, short tail and steeply rising neck. Its enlarged head is modelled with pointed ears, a prominent circular eye and a broad muzzle crossed by a horizontal band, while an opening at the cheek or mouth may relate to the representation of a bridle. The modelling is deliberately schematic yet noticeably heavier and more rounded than that of the canonical slender Greek Geometric horse type. Dark brown patination covers most of the surface, accompanied by green corrosion products and scattered pale deposits, none of which can independently establish the object’s age or origin. The form may belong broadly within an early first-millennium B.C. Mediterranean tradition. Size: 75mm x 85mm; Weight: 175g Provenance: From a private UK collection; previously part of the R.A. collection, assembled since the 1970s.
