Greek Gold Ring | Veiled Woman at Thymiaterion Incense Burner

Greek Gold Ring | Veiled Woman at Thymiaterion Incense Burner

Ancient Greece, Late Classical period. A gold finger ring whose round bezel holds a scene of devotion: a veiled woman stands before a thymiaterion, an incense burner, with one hand raised toward the rising offering. The ring is of high-purity gold, assayed at about 21 karat. A slender hoop widens into the disc-shaped bezel, which has a beaded border and an intaglio field. The woman faces left in profile. Her himation is drawn over her head as a veil, and her chiton falls in long, column-like folds. The thymiaterion's tall shaft is marked by disc-shaped flanges and topped by a shallow bowl, and a tongue of flame, or perhaps a wisp of smoke, rises from it toward her hand. Curved beaded arcs behind her may suggest the enclosure of a sanctuary. Incense was among the most intimate offerings in Greek religion. It was burned in temples, at household shrines, and beside the dead. Frankincense reached the Aegean from South Arabia, a land Herodotus placed at the southern edge of the inhabited world, and Sappho's invocation to Aphrodite pictures altars smoking with it. The veil marks the woman as a decorous participant in cult: a priestess, a devout mortal, or perhaps Aphrodite herself, whose worship was famously fragrant. The smell of offerings mattered so much to divine contentment that Aristophanes, in the Birds, imagined a city in the clouds that intercepts the smoke and starves Olympus into negotiation. Gold finger rings flourished across the Greek world in the 4th century BCE, serving as seals, marks of status, and personal talismans. Pressed into wax, this figure would face the opposite direction, as intaglio images always do. Light and finely made, the ring was likely a treasured personal ornament, and perhaps later an offering for the grave. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 205332
