Ring Green Tourmaline Set in 925. Sterling silver New and unworn Green tourmalines are also called verdelith. This designation, however, says nothing about the mineralogical assignment to a specific type of tourmaline. The name verdelith simply describes the color of the tourmaline. The mineral group of tourmalines comprises a range of boron-containing, similar ring silicates with a complex structure. Today twelve tourmaline species are distinguished, which mostly occur as solid solutions. In the past, the name 'tourmaline' was a catch-all term for unknown, usually red gemstones and was derived in the 18th century in Europe from its then source in the Sinhala language; it means 'something small from the earth' (toramolli). Today, tourmalines are often referred to as the 'gemstones of the rainbow' because of their many colors.
