Ring Green Tourmaline Set in 925 sterling silver New and unworn Green tourmalines are also called verdelite. However, this designation says nothing about the mineralogical assignment to a specific type of tourmaline. The name verdelite simply describes the color of the tourmaline. The mineral group of tourmalines comprises a range of boron-containing, similar ring silicates with a complicated structure. Today, twelve tourmaline varieties are distinguished, most of which occur as mixed crystals. In the past, the name 'tourmaline' was a catch-all term for unknown, usually red gemstones, and in the 18th century in Europe it was derived from its Sinhalese origin, meaning 'something small from the earth' (toramolli). Today, tourmalines are often referred to as the 'gems of the rainbow' because of their many colors.
