Grote antieke roodkoperen aker – 18e–19e eeuw –...

Large antique red-brass aker – 18th–19th century – Hand-forged riveted – Authentic patina An impressive piece of antique copperwork in which centuries of use have left their marks! This particularly large, antique red-brass aker is a beautiful example of traditional copper smithing. The robust form, the heavy metal carrying handle, and the distinctive rows of copper rivets give this object its characteristic, artisanal appearance. What makes this aker especially distinctive is its pronounced well-worn look. The red brass has over the years developed a splendid interplay of warm copper tones, dark discolorations, and local green oxidation. The visible hammer marks, dents and irregularities tell the story of an object that has indeed been used. The aker is made from joined copper plates, with the joints reinforced by rows of rivets. The top edge has a sturdy folded rim and is fitted with two metal carrying eyes to which the movable handle is attached. The interior also shows a beautiful old patina. Historical background The aker was for centuries a familiar household item in Europe. These cylindrical copper buckets were used for drawing and transporting water, domestic tasks, and as a container for firewood by the hearth. The Rijksmuseum Muiderslot has similar copper akers from the 18th century in its collection. These were traditionally produced by coppersmiths, who formed the sheet material by hammering and connected the different parts with rivets. This specimen, with its heavy construction, riveted build, and weathered surface, aligns with this ancient artisanal tradition. Today it is a particularly decorative object. Its generous size makes it wonderful as a wood bin beside an open fireplace, as a rustic interior ornament, or as a focal point in a country, industrial, or historical interior. Features * Object: large antique aker / copper bucket * Period: presumably 18th–19th century * Material: red brass with metal carrying handle * Fabrication: traditional copper work, riveted construction * Execution: cylindrical, with reinforced upper rim * Particularities: visible riveted connections, carrying eyes and movable handle * Finish: old, naturally formed patina * Height: approximately 27 cm * Height including upright handle: approximately 45 cm * Diameter: approximately 42 cm * Use: antique collector’s item, decorative hearth bucket or wood bin Condition A distinctly well-worn antique condition with numerous traces of long-term use. The copper shows dents, deformities, surface damage, dark buildup, local green oxidation, and color variations. At the upper rim, at the height of one of the handle attachments, there is a clear crack/damage in the copper. This is shown separately in the detail photos. The aker is offered as a historical and decorative object. Water resistance and suitability for carrying heavy loads are not guaranteed. The existing patina is preserved, allowing the authentic, lived-in character to come fully to the fore. A characterful piece of historic copperwork that impresses not only with its generous dimensions but especially with its beautiful, time-shaped appearance. Dimensions Height 27 cm and 45 cm with handle Diameter 42 cm The interior photos have been generated with AI and are intended solely to illustrate the object in a living environment. The photos provide a clear view of the quality and are part of the description. Shipping Shipping is only to destinations within the European Union and only via Catawiki Smart Shipping.
