This original sheet is an incunabulum from 1493 extracted from the Liber Chronicarum, printed in Nuremberg by Anton Koberger with the monumental textual and iconographic layout impressed by the renowned workshop of Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. The front of the page focuses predominantly on the history and development of religious institutions, opening with the chronicle and the woodcut depiction of the Order of the Crociferi (Ordo cruciferorum), of which its approval and regulation within the Lateran Council is narrated. On the right there is space for the portrait of an eastern sovereign who introduces the geographical and anthropological description of the first rulers of the Mongol Empire, collectively referred to as princes of the Tartars (Tartarorum regni principes), described for their formidable military prowess and for their Asian origins. The lower part of the front is dominated by a second large conventual woodcut devoted to the birth and spread of the Order of the Carmelites (Ordo carmelitarum), describing the origins of the congregation on Mount Carmel in Syria by the work of Patriarch Albert of Jerusalem, the early austere monastic rules, and the subsequent transfer of the friars to Europe. Turning the page, the back is entirely devoted to the political and dynastic chronicle of the Holy Roman Empire at the beginning of the 13th century, placed in the line of imperial succession (Lineae imperatorum). The narrative delves into the dramatic contest for the imperial throne that broke out after the death of Henry VI, presenting the opposing biographies and their respective woodcut portraits of Philip of Swabia (Philippus) and his rival Otto IV of Brunswick (Otto quartus). The text traces the alternating military fortunes of both sovereigns, the complex and changing diplomatic relations and excommunications entertained with Pope Innocent III, the devastations that struck Germany as a consequence of this imperial schism, and the tragic conclusions of their reigns, marked respectively by Philip’s assassination and by Otto’s subsequent political decline after the historic defeat at the Battle of Bouvines.
