Headdress - Folk Art

This Tibetan ceremonial hat probably dates from the second half of the 20th century. It is tightly adorned with red coral beads, Bohemian glass beads, and cowrie shells. On top, an ornament of silvered metal and turquoise, whose design strongly recalls the characteristic Akor jewelry from Lhasa and Ladakh. The inside of the hat is finished with a black cotton lining. Such hats were mainly worn at ceremonies, ritual dances, and festive occasions. They reflect the spiritual meaning of Tibetan symbolism and materials: turquoise stands for protection and harmony, while cowrie shells are considered a good luck charm and a symbol of prosperity. Red coral and Bohemian glass beads were all imported along the established Silk Road—from Italy, through the Czech lands via Istanbul to East China—and were a symbol of wealth. Dimensions: diameter approx. 20 cm, height approx. 10 cm. Weight 680 g.
