Henri-Alexis SCHAEFFER (1900-1975, French artist) Rue Berton in Passy (France) oil on canvas 61 x 46 cm (12P) very good condition circa 1925-1935 from a private collection oil sold in its beautiful frame Montparnasse 78 x 63.2 cm Henri-Alexis Schaeffer (1900-1975) was a French draftsman, decorator and painter. He had the good fortune to study under the great artist Fernand Cormont (1845-1924); Fernand Cormont who also had as pupils Vincent van Gogh or Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. In 1934, H.A. Schaeffer became a member of the Société des Artistes Français, which allowed him to exhibit numerous works every year at the Paris Salon. He is known for religious architectural tableaux, scenes relating to Paris and its region, landscapes of Corsica and Brittany, portraits... He also decorated the central hall of Hohnstein Castle in Germany. He is a listed artist, referenced in Bénezit. His works are sought after. This artist cherished the work of the great French novelist Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850). During his life, he visited several times the house that the famous writer had rented between 1840 and 1847, on Rue Berton in Passy (near Paris). This house and its garden had two entrances (facing two streets). H.A. Schaeffer represents in this painting, in its original aspect, the entrance at No. 24 on the discreet Rue Berton. Along with a superb work of art, this painting is an important testimony for Balzac enthusiasts.
