All auctions / Arts & Graphics / Henri Harpignies (French, 1819-1916) The entrance to an Italian village

signed with initials l.r., oil on panel, 21.5 x 15cm; framed 31 x 24cm, Sotheby's, London, 19 April 1978;, Sotheby's, London, 19 April 1978; J. W. B. Matthews, Lindsey House Collection, number 31. Condition Report, Condition Report, The panel is cradled and appears to be in plane and presently stable. There is a line which appears to be a possible join in the panel running parallel to the right edge of the work 2.5cm in from the edge of the frame, in line with one of the supports verso. Examined under UV light, retouching shows along the join and at the base of the trees. There is some further fluorescing in the lower left quarter, however this appears to relate to particular darker pigments used by the artist. The work has a thick layer of glossy varnish underneath which some fine cracking can be seen on close inspection, however the paint appears to be stable without any losses or flaking. There are a couple of light scratches across the tree canopy in the upper centre. Please see additional condition images. Request A Condition Report, Request A Condition Report
