Canadian. A cover page illustration by Henri Julien (1852-1908) from the Montreal Daily Star supplement "Carnival Number" which presented articles pertaining to the carnival as an important cultural and entertaining event showcasing Montreal winter sports such as snowshoeing and tobogganing. The Carnival was held 1883-1885, 1887, and 1889 with this illustration dating to 1885. Henri Julien worked as an illustrator/cartoonist in the late 19th century and was employed by "Canadian Illustrated News" and the "Montreal Daily Star"— the "Star" was the first Canadian newspaper to employ a full-time editorial cartoonist. At the centre of the illustration is a Roman chariot style drawing of a snowshoe club member riding a toboggan pulled by three energetic horses. Published by Graham & Co in 1885. Titled, at the bottom. Marked, "The Carnival".
