Condition: the work is in excellent condition. Format: 45 x 36 cm. Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a French painter, recognized as one of the great artists of the 20th century alongside Pablo Picasso. Born in Cateau-Cambrésis, Matisse began painting during a recovery period in 1890 and decided to become an artist, despite his parents’ opposition. He studied at the Julian School and the School of Fine Arts in Paris, where he studied under the Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau. Matisse is known for his innovative use of color and form in his paintings, sculptures, and drawings. He was one of the leaders of the Fauvist movement, characterized by the use of pure colors and a portrayal of the intensity of emotions. His work is based on simplification, stylization, and synthesis. As for the value of his works, purchase prices range between €150,000 and €300,000 for a Matisse painting from early Fauvism, while Fauvist canvases and Orientalist portraits from the twenties and thirties fetch prices between €1 and €5 million. The original painting shows the moment when Henri Matisse laid the foundations for Fauvism, an important movement in modern art. The artwork is titled Luxe, Calme et Volupté and was painted by Henri Matisse in 1904. The title is taken from a poem by Charles Baudelaire, “L'invitation au voyage.” Matisse painted this work during a stay in Saint-Tropez, where he worked with Neo-Impressionist painters. The painting is currently exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Never been framed and kept in dark archival storage between protective acid-free paper.
