Henri Matisse (1869-1954) - "Portrait of Lydia Delectorskaya

Henri Matisse. Title “Portrait of Lydia Delectorskaya, 1942”. Signed and dated in the print. Matisse signed this work bottom right with his characteristic signature and the year ’42’, a period in which, despite the war and personal illness, he underwent a tremendous creative renewal. Authorized color offset lithograph, produced premium matte (non-reflective) with high color intensity. Condition: the work is in excellent condition. Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a French painter, recognized as one of the great artists of the 20th century alongside Pablo Picasso. Born in Cateau-Cambrésis, Matisse began painting during a recovery period in 1890 and decided to become an artist, despite his parents’ opposition. He studied at the Julian School and the School of Fine Arts in Paris, where he took lessons from the Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau. Matisse is known for his innovative use of color and form in his paintings, sculptures, and drawings. He was one of the leaders of the Fauvist movement, characterized by the use of pure colors and a depiction of the intensity of emotions. His work is based on simplification, stylization, and synthesis. Regarding the valuation of his works, purchase prices range between €150,000 and €300,000 for a Fauvist-era Matisse painting, while Fauvist canvases and Orientalist portraits from the twenties and thirties reach prices between €1 and €5 million. This iconic portrait is a beautiful example of the work of Henri Matisse, one of the most important artists of the 20th century. The painting, completed in 1942, depicts Lydia Delectorskaya, who for years was Matisse’s muse, assistant, and model. Matisse is known for his ability to achieve enormous expressiveness with minimal lines and bold colors. In this particular work you can see several characteristic elements of his later style. The face is split into a blue and a yellow half. This is not a realistic rendering of shadows, but a way to create depth and emotion through color contrast. The thick black outline around the face and hair gives the work a nearly graphic, modern character. The green background (the hair) contrasts sharply with the orange-brown color of the wall, drawing immediate attention to the face. Lydia played a crucial role in Matisse’s life, especially in his later years when his health declined. Never framed and stored in a dark archival storage between protective acid-free paper. The displayed photos are part of the description. If, on multiple orders, the shipping costs are not automatically combined, you will always receive back from us the multiple paid shipping costs so that you only pay shipping once. This artwork is carefully securely packaged and shipped in protective acid-free paper. No shipping to the Canary Islands.
