Born in Cateau-Cambresis, Matisse began painting during a recovery period in 1890 and decided to become an artist, despite his parents’ opposition. He studied at the Julian School and the School of Fine Arts in Paris, where he took lessons from the Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau. Matisse is known for his innovative use of color and form in his paintings, sculptures and drawings. He was one of the leaders of the Fauvist movement, characterized by the use of pure colors and an expression of the intensity of emotions. His work is based on simplification, stylization and synthesis. As for the appreciation of his works, purchase prices range between 150,000 and 300,000 euros for an early Fauvist Matisse painting, while Fauvist canvases and Orientalist portraits from the twenties and thirties reach prices between 1 and 5 million euros.
