The paint is laid on with the palette knife in thick, sparkling slabs of colour — D’Anty’s unmistakable technique. Henry Maurice D’Anty (1910–1998), born in Belleville and trained at the Grande Chaumière and the Académie Julian, settled after the war in Montmartre, where he worked in Picasso’s former studio, and exhibited for decades at the Salon des Peintres Témoins de leur Temps. His knife-painted landscapes, villages and harbours, glowing with impasto, entered many public collections in France and North America. Signed ‘d’Anty’ at the lower left and again on the reverse.
