HERCULES BRABAZON BRABAZON (BRITISH 1821-1906), VIEW OF CAPRI

HERCULES BRABAZON BRABAZON (BRITISH 1821-1906) VIEW OF CAPRI Watercolour and bodycolour Signed with initials and inscribed 'Capri' (lower right) 25 x 35cm (9¾ x 13¾in.) Brabazon was feted by great art critic John Ruskin, who wrote in 1882, 'Brabazon is the only person since Turner at whose feet I can sit and worship and learn about colour'. He was also a a friend of the American artist John Singer Sargent, who painted his portrait (National Portrait Gallery) and wrote in the introduction to Brabazon's first exhibition in 1892 at the Goupil Gallery, 'The gift of colour, together with an exquisite sensitivity to impressions of Nature, has been here the constant incentive, and the immunity from 'picture' making has gone far to keep perception delicate and execution convincing.' The present view of Capri is an excellent example of Brabazon's technique of using Chinese white bodycolour applied in a single stroke with the watercolour. Brabazon would first load his brush with watercolour, then top up the tip with the heavier bodycolour, thereby retaining the reflective qualities of watercolour.
