Hokusai – Fuji in Deep Snow (Shinsetsu no Fuji) – One...

Artist: Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾北斎, 1760–1849) Title: Shinsetsu no Fuji 深雪の不二 (Fuji in Deep Snow) Series: Fugaku Hyakkei 富嶽百景 (One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji), Volume 3 Technique: Woodblock print (ukiyo-e), colour (nishiki-e) Date: Japan, c. 1849, Edo period published by Nishimuraya Yohachi Format: Double-page illustration (mihiraki), from the bound volume; together approx. 22 × 26 cm Condition Very good condition; minor tape residue on the backside! Please check the images! About the print Fugaku Hyakkei is widely regarded as Hokusai's masterpiece in book form. It is a three-volume picture book of views of Mount Fuji, published in black and grey ink. It came after his famous colour series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji (c. 1830–32). The first volume appeared in 1834. Its postface is the well-known statement Hokusai signed as "Gakyō Rōjin Manji" (the Old Man Mad About Painting). In it he says that nothing he drew before the age of seventy was worth noticing, and he hopes to have truly reached the essence of things by the age of 110. The book treats Fuji as a sacred mountain and a symbol of immortality, showing it from very different viewpoints, seasons and situations. The monochrome palette moved the attention onto line, composition and Hokusai's inventive ideas. Many collectors see the books as more experimental than the colour prints. Volume 3, which includes this design, appeared around the time of Hokusai's death in 1849. Shinsetsu no Fuji is spread over two facing pages. These were printed as one book opening and are offered here as two separate sheets that together form the complete design.
