HOLL — “BAD COIN” HOLL. Bad coin. Paris, published by Duclaux, 21 Place du Château-d’Eau; distributed by Madre, 20 Rue du Croissant, [circa 1870–1871]. A political caricature depicting a gigantic ten-centime coin bearing the inscription “EMPIRE FRANÇAIS.” The imperial eagle is reimagined as an anthropomorphic figure with a long mustache, a satirical allusion to Napoleon III and the fall of the Second Empire. Title “Bad Coin” at the top. Black lithograph, signed “Holl” on the plate. Printed by Imp. Delplanche, 73 Passage du Caire, Paris. Full-sheet print. A few creases, small tears, and marginal damage; slight foxing; old handwritten note in the upper margin.
