Description: Dutch School, 19th century Title: Sea Scene – Stormy Maritime Scene Medium and technique: oil on panel Dimensions: 15 × 23 cm; with frame 32 × 40.5 cm Signature: possibly monogram ‘L’, lower left Marks: red wax seal on the reverse, not assessed for maker or function A stormy sea surrounds a high, centrally placed rock mass. To the left is a tilted vessel with masts, rigging and several figures. On the right lies an open boat with multiple occupants, slanted on the waves. In the foreground a figure is partially in the water, with an arm raised. Dark clouds on the left contrast with the lighter sky on the right. The palette consists mainly of gray, greenish, and brown tones, with white foam crests, ochre light accents and small red, yellow and blue touches in the clothing. Technique and material analysis The oil paint is applied with clearly visible brushwork. Broad strokes describe the rock mass and the clouds, while curved light strokes mark the wave crests and the splashing water. The figures are indicated with a few compact color touches. Locally there is fine craquelure. The wax seal on the reverse bears an eight-pointed imprint with military attributes, including a helmet, banners and a drum. Composition and form analysis The central rock forms the vertical axis of the horizontal composition. The slanted angles of both vessels and the successive arcades of the waves determine the directions of movement. Overlaps between waves, ships and rocks create depth. The dark left half stands opposite the illuminated right side, where the rowboat is outlined against the foam and the sky. Small color accents distinguish the figures from their surroundings. Stylistic and art-historical context The work belongs to the Romantic marine painting within the 19th-century Dutch School. The rocky environment, the turbulent sea, the pronounced light contrast and the small scale of the figures relative to the rock mass support this placement. The concise rendering of the figures and the lively brushwork reinforce the dynamic character of the scene. Comparable artists Johannes Christiaan Schotel, Wijnand Nuijen, Andreas Schelfhout, Claude Joseph Vernet, Théodore Gudin Condition The panel is stable. The paint layer shows localized fine craquelure. Retouchings have not been established. The painting has recently undergone a light cleaning and been given a new varnish layer. Conclusion This small panel painting is situated within 19th-century Dutch Romantic marine painting. The possible monogram and the unidentified wax seal do not provide grounds for further attribution. The support is stable and the varnish layer has been recently renewed.
