Hollandse School (XVIII-XIX) - Stilleven Fruitstuk (No Reserve)

Description: Dutch School XVIII-XIX Title: Still Life Fruit Piece Medium and supports: Oil on panel Dimensions: 59 × 51 cm; with frame 82 × 74 cm Signature: Unsigned Provenance: Dutch art dealer collection Dutch School XVIII-XIX is a regional and chronological classification. Dutch fruit- and flower-painting from this period built on a specialty developed in the seventeenth century. Detailed representation of nature was combined with carefully staged arrangements. Fruits, leaves and insects offered opportunities to treat a variety of shapes, colors and surfaces within one composition. Justus van Huysum (1659-1716) represents the older still-life tradition with arrangements against a dark background. His arrangements also formed part of decorative ensembles for homes. He trained his son Jan van Huysum, who continued the fruit- and flower-painting in the eighteenth century and later placed his compositions against lighter backgrounds. Georgius Jacobus Johannes van Os (1782-1861) belongs to the nineteenth-century continuation of this tradition. He was trained by his father, the still life and marine painter Jan van Os, and worked in the Netherlands and France. In addition to landscapes, he painted fruit- and flower-still lifes, in which the ordering of natural objects and the differentiation of their surfaces are central. His work for the Sevres porcelain factory connects this painting tradition with French decorative arts. Justus van Huysum and Georgius van Os thus serve as historical reference points for this visual tradition. Object description On a brown tablet, light and dark grape clusters, pears and peaches are arranged. Leaves, branches and curled vines surround the fruit. Above the central grape clusters is a butterfly on a slanted twig. At the front lies a sliced, partially peeled citrus fruit, a cut-off portion of it and a knife. A long strip of peel hangs over the edge of the table. The background is dark brown and barely spatially developed. Technique and material analysis The painting is executed in oil on panel. The fruits are modeled by gradual transitions between light and shadowed areas. Small, individual light accents articulate the roundness of the grapes; finer lines and brushstrokes distinguish the tendrils, leaf veins and the butterfly’s wing pattern. Under UV fluorescence no recognizable retouchings were detected. Composition and form analysis The fruits and foliage form an irregular pyramidal arrangement. The light-colored grapes determine the central mass, while the ascending branch marks the highest point. The diagonal left-hand branch connects the lower fruits with the upper foliage. In contrast, the horizontal table edge and the branch extending to the right provide crosswise accents. Overlaps and height differences create a shallow but layered space. The light mainly comes from the upper left and accentuates the central grapes, the peaches and the sliced fruit. Yellow-green and bluish-gray tones contrast with the warm pink and ocher-toned fruits. The dark grapes on the lower left interrupt the light central area. The hanging peel breaks the table edge and links the scene to the space in front of the table. Stylistic and art-historical context The compact piling of fruits, the dark ground and directed lighting align with the Baroque Dutch still-life tradition. Within that tradition, botanical details were combined with an orderly interplay of rounded fruit forms, jagged leaves and winding vines. Fruit arrangements with insects are among the repertoire of Jan Davidsz. de Heem. The combination of grapes, foliage and a butterfly places the work within this broader visual tradition. The knife and the sliced citrus connect the fruit arrangement with the Dutch table still life. The cross-section and hanging peel add other forms and surfaces to the closed fruits. The Baroque stylization here rests mainly on light-dark contrast, diagonal movement, and the alternation between compact masses and spreading foliage. These conventions were continued in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries within Dutch fruit- and flower-painting. Comparable artists Justus van Huysum, Jan van Os, Georgius Jacobus Johannes van Os, Louise Moillon, Luis Meléndez Condition The work shows localized paint loss. The panel is stable. Recently cleaned and stabilized in the frame. Conclusion Still Life Fruit Piece, classified as Dutch School XVIII-XIX, aligns with the continuation of the Baroque Dutch fruit still life. The central fruit mass, the dark ground and the diagonal branches determine the formal coherence. The identified condition includes localized paint loss on a stable panel.
