HONG KONG (SAR). Mercantile Bank of India Limited. 50 Dollars, 1.1.1930.

Imposing 1930 'Banana Boat' $50 Specimen in 65-EPQ! HONG KONG (SAR). Mercantile Bank of India Limited. 50 Dollars, 1.1.1930. P-238s. KNB14S. Specimen. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. Brown and black on light blue and pink, upper central vignette depicting a coastal scene, reverse in similar colours, Mercury with winged helmet at centre. An original choice uncirculated note in bold and striking colours on original paper. Well deserving of its 65-EPQ Gem status for its crisp, clean and original paper body. One of four notes in the second-highest grade, surpassed by just one example in 66-EPQ that we sold in October 2024 for $72,000, including the Buyer's Premium. Nicknamed the 'Banana Split' by local collectors for the curved shape of the vignette, this is a classic, iconic type throughout the entire Hong Kong series. Only three to four issued notes are extant, with the last one sold by us in April 2026 for an incredible USD$97,600 inclusive of the Buyer's Premium; therefore, the most likely way to obtain this type is through either specimens or colour trials. With the recent strong interest in high-end Hong Kong specimens, we are certain that this piece will be the centre of attention in our Hong Kong section. Estimate: $40,000 - $60,000. Provenance: From the Grass Unweeded Collection. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
