Hornby (C.H. St. John).- Rossetti (Dante Gabriel) La Vita Nuova di Dante, second edition, C.H. St. John Hornby's copy with bookplate and tipped-in manuscript f. noting that 'this book was a present from Eleanor Hornby [Hornby's sister] - 1st July 1947", 11 plates after Rossetti, captioned tissue-guards (foxed, occasionally to plates), spotting to edges, a few spots elsewhere, Ernest Tatham and Margaret Mary Richmond bookplate, contemporary Cockerell-style morocco-backed marbled paper boards, morocco tooled in blind and decorated with gilt dots, spine lightly sunned, minor rubbing to extremities, t.e.g., others uncut, 4to, Turin-Rome, Casa Editrice Nazionale, 1903. *** This copy belonged to C.H. St. John Hornby, the founder and owner of the Ashendene Press. Hornby considered Dante to be the Altissimo Poeta, and produced five superb Dante editions through his Ashendene Press including Tutte le Opere di Dante (1909), the magnum opus of the press and considered one of the greatest of the English Fine Press editions. Ernest Richmond was an architect. He was closely associated with the International Arts & Craft Movement, and with C. R. Ashbee of Essex House Press.
