North America, Eastern Canada / Northeastern United States. A pair of Huron style snowshoes with steam-bent frames of white ash, likely, laced with hide webbing and fitted with leather binding straps and cotton shoelaces. Each frame is branded "HBC," for the Hudson's Bay Company, one of many suppliers of snowshoes for sport, winter travel, and hunting in the early 20th century. The teardrop form with trailing tail originates with the Huron-Wendat people of eastern Canada and the northeastern United States, was adopted by French colonists, and became a favored pattern for the winter sport craze of the early 1900s. Snowshoes of this form and material are still made and used today. The set is clearly aged, with an alligatored patina to the varnish overall. Item # 204475
