Iceni, Base AV Stater, 'Norfolk Wolf Left' Type, Gallic War issue, wreath, cloak, and crescents, rev. bristle-maned wolf left, jaws open, bird on back, pellets and crescent above, pellet and crescent below, 5.53g, 7h (Evans C3; BMC 218-78; Mack 49b; VA 610-2; ABC 1399), this issue, with a spot of silver-horn on the reverse, and a touch of die flattening in the obverse, is struck sharply on a thick flan, and is a debased gold variant, minted during a period of economic strife brought upon the Iceni by the Gallic War. Nevertheless, this coin is pleasing in hand, its debasement giving an electrum-like appearance, and is near extremely fine Provenance The Roy Hattrill Collection of Celtic Coins C Rudd, Liz's List 81 (February 2016), no. 16 [with this ticket and envelope] Subject to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium.
