ICO PARISI (ITALIAN, 1916-1996) A 'POSITANO' CHEST OF DRAWERS, DESIGNED 1958, CIRCA 1965 Walnut, black lacquered metal Manufactured by MIM ROMA with manufacturer's label. 88cm high, 73cm wide, 45cm deep The present chest of drawers belongs to Ico Parisi's longstanding association with MIM (Mobili Italiani Moderni), the Roman furniture manufacturer with whom he developed a number of important designs during the 1950s and 1960s. Founded in Rome, MIM became associated with the production of modern Italian furniture, working with designers including Parisi to translate contemporary design into carefully manufactured pieces for the post-war domestic and professional interior. Parisi's collaboration with MIM produced some of his most recognisable furniture, including the Urio modular storage system of 1957, the Lerici shelving system and the Taormina series of 1958. The relationship was particularly suited to Parisi's approach to furniture, which combined practical storage with a restrained architectural vocabulary. MIM's production enabled his designs to be realised as coherent furniture systems, with materials such as walnut and rosewood complemented by painted or lacquered metal. Condition Report: This presents in overall good but vintage condition. Fixings and fittings all present, re. the metalwork, the right back leg is off straight, but against the wall in the gallery as it is now, it is not obvious. When the piece is away from a wall it is more obvious but it is strong/stable, there is no wobble to the piece. There are multiple surface knocks, scratches and marks commiserate with age and use, particularly at the edges of the piece and around the drawers' edges, and particularly to the top right hand drawer. The left hand drawer has the MIM ROMA label and impressed numbers inside. The top and most of the wood retains a clean overall look, the top right drawer again - the wood is a touch lighter, but this is not obvious in most lights. Please see additional images provided.
