Icon - Nicholas the Wonderworker - Wood

Antique Russian icon "St. Nicholas of Myra" from the 19th century (circa 1880). Hand-painted with egg tempera colors on a wooden panel with a chalk ground. Typical method of icon production in 18th- and 19th-century Tsarist Russia. The motif is widespread and very popular in the Orthodox Church. This is an Old Believers icon. The painting is quite masterful and detailed. Perfectly coordinated color contrasts and successful shading. The painting contains very authentic craquelure (see photos). Partial restorations are present (see photos). Especially expressive and striking is the face of the saint (see photos). The saint is labeled. The inscriptions are clearly legible. The icon was created around 1850–1880 in Northern Russia. On the back both cross wedges are missing. Sturdy and solid wooden panel. The icon is in good condition with typical age-related signs of wear (see photos). An icon for collectors and connoisseurs of the field. All details are clearly visible in the photos. Photos are part of the description. Dimensions: 31 x 26.5 x 2 cm
