Ikea table lamp “Cumulus” L9003 designer Tomas Jellinek, Sweden 1980s This iconic table lamp, designed by Tomas Jellinek for Ikea in the 1980s (model L9003, the “Cumulus” series), is a masterpiece of postmodern Scandinavian design. The lamp is defined by its dramatic, clean arc. A single tubular arm in chrome-plated metal gracefully arches from a weighted round base to suspend the lampshade in an overhanging position. The lampshade itself is a flat, smooth domed disk that evokes the look of a stylized cloud (hence the name “Cumulus”) or perhaps a flying saucer UFO. Its form is minimalist yet has a strong sculptural presence. The curved arm is in polished chrome steel. The switch is operated by a distinct white pull cord with a small cylindrical tassel, hanging from the center of the chrome lampshade.
