Imperial German Empire St Sebastian Bavaria Banner

Imperial German Empire St Sebastian Bavaria Banner

A German, dated 1905. Double-sided ceremonial association banner, silk with embroidered, painted, and applique decoration, metallic thread and gilt fringe. A highly decorative Bavarian military veterans’ association banner belonging to the Militär- & Kampfgenossen-Verein Hohenroth (Military & Combat Comrades’ Association of Hohenroth), founded and dedicated on January 6, 1905. The banner is executed in pale blue and white and lavishly embellished with embroidered and painted imagery, gilt and metallic thread, foliate ornament, military trophies, heraldic devices, and an extensive gold-colored fringe. The front, or Vereinsseite, is prominently inscribed in elaborate German Fraktur: "Militär- & Kampfgenossen-Ver. Hohenroth" with the foundation inscription "Gegründet 6. Januar 1905.". The central panel presents a finely rendered devotional image of Saint Sebastian, shown bound to a tree and pierced by arrows. Saint Sebastian was traditionally venerated as a patron of soldiers and military associations, making the religious subject particularly appropriate to a veterans’ organization. The image is surrounded by an elaborate wreath of flowering branches and foliate ornament. The four corner medallions are devoted to military equipment and martial symbolism. The upper left depicts a substantial field artillery piece, while the upper right incorporates a military drum, bugle, and crossed sabers. The lower left features infantry rifles, ammunition equipment, and a Pickelhaube, while the lower right displays crossed cavalry lances and banners. Together, these motifs celebrate the various branches and equipment of the Imperial German military. The reverse, or Landesseite, is devoted to Bavarian patriotism and military remembrance. Surrounding the composition is the traditional motto: "Mit Gott für König und Vaterland!" "With God for King and Fatherland!". At the center is an exceptionally elaborate Royal Bavarian Coat of Arms, surrounded by a monumental wreath of oak leaves and rendered with extensive gilt and polychrome decoration. The arms form the dominant visual focus of the reverse and emphasize the association’s allegiance to the Kingdom of Bavaria. The four corner medallions commemorate major engagements of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871, linking the banner to the military experiences of the veterans who formed the association. Paris and Sedan occupy the upper corners, while Orléans and Wörth appear below. The inclusion of these battle names reflects the veterans’ remembrance of the campaigns in which members of their generation served and fought. Wörth, fought on August 6, 1870, was one of the major early engagements of the Franco-Prussian War, while the fighting around Orléans during the latter part of 1870 represented some of the particularly intense operations of the conflict. Sedan, the decisive German victory of September 1, 1870, and the Siege of Paris further recall the military campaign that culminated in French defeat and German unification. From a White Plains, NY estate. Dimensions: flag measures approx. 53.50" x 60". Condition: Overall condition consistent with age, use, and period. The banner displays extensive creasing and wrinkling, general fading and discoloration, surface soiling, and scattered areas of wear. The silk ground has scattered pulls, snags, abrasions, and areas of weakness, with minor holes, splits, tears, and losses noted to the fabric and along some edges and seams. The embroidered, painted, and metallic decoration exhibits rubbing, wear, tarnishing/oxidation, and localized losses. The gilt fringe is worn and uneven, with areas of fraying, tangling, and loss. Additional minor condition issues may be present and are not necessarily visible in the accompanying photographs. Examination in person is recommended. Condition:, A German, dated 1905.
