Impressive Vintage Mediterranean Coral Necklace with Diamond Clasp, c. 1985

The precious corals, which are mainly used to make jewellery, come in a variety of colours. The corals have a uniform, intense red colour. A gold clasp with ten diamonds holds the 21 strands together and adds a vibrant contrast to the warm red colour of the marine treasures. Multi-strand necklaces like this one, where the individual strands can be twisted together, are called torsades. This term is derived from the French ‘torsadée’, which means ‘twisted’.
