Ca. AD 18001900 An Indian steel tabarzin war axe featuring a broad crescent-shaped blade with sharply pointed extremities, mounted on a long cylindrical steel haft. The blade is embellished with finely engraved floral and vegetal motifs, including symmetrical scrolling ornaments and a densely decorated central panel. Opposite the blade is a rectangular hammer poll, while a long, slender spike projects vertically above the axe head. The central socket is decorated with geometric and foliate engravings, complementing the ornamentation of the blade. The tubular haft terminates in a rounded finial and displays a dark brown patina, while the blade retains a mottled grey surface with areas of oxidation and wear. Size: 76.5mm Provenance: Private London collection; US art market, before 2000. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
