Indo-Persian Silk Miniature - Court Scene

South Asia, Indo-Persian tradition, ca. 20th century CE. A luminous durbar unfolds across cerulean silk: a robed dignitary seated at center receives the attentions of turbaned courtiers while attendants crowd the steps and white horses wait below, indifferent to the politics above them. Painted in opaque watercolor on silk, the composition follows conventions long established in Mughal and Safavid manuscript illustration, with the characteristic blue ground, tiered architectural setting, and flattened perspective that workshop painters in Rajasthan and Lucknow adapted well into the modern era for the collector market. The border, enlivened with ink-drawn botanical sprays, frames the scene with the understated elegance of a page that once knew a book. Size of painting: 6" W x 8" H (15.2 cm W x 20.3 cm H); of frame: 9.6" W x 11.6" H (24.4 cm W x 29.5 cm H) Item # 193544
