Materazzi is a former Italian footballer and coach, part of the squad that won the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Early in his career, Materazzi played for several Italian clubs in Serie B and Serie C, as well as Everton in the Premier League. He had two spells at Perugia (1995-1998 and 1999-2001), and signed for Inter Milan in 2001 for 10 million euros. At club level, he won numerous major titles with Inter, including five consecutive Serie A championships between 2006 and 2010, a UEFA Champions League, a FIFA Club World Cup, four Coppa Italia titles and four Italian Super Cups. Materazzi earned 41 caps for the Italian national team between his debut in 2001 and 2008, taking part in two World Cups and two European Championships. He was one of the key players in the 2006 World Cup Final against France: he conceded an early penalty that allowed France’s first goal, scored the equalizer twelve minutes later and, in extra time, received a header from Zinedine Zidane, who was sent off with a red card. Italy went on to win the World Cup in the penalty shootout, during which Materazzi again scored. A provocative figure in football, he was known for his very physical and aggressive defensive style, which led to multiple red cards throughout his career. Also, at Inter he won a UEFA Champions League, two Coppa Italia titles, two Super Cups, one European Cup and five Scudetti, in addition to making his debut with the Italian national team.
