Intriguing soul figure Sepik River - Mindimbit village...

An impressive and expressive ancestral figure from Mindimbit village, Middle Sepik River region, Papua New Guinea. This remarkable wooden sculpture represents a powerful human figure with an oversized head, enormous circular eyes and a prominent nose. The eyes are decorated with white shell inlays, creating an intense and almost hypnotic expression. A third eye-like motif is carved into the forehead, adding to the figure’s mysterious appearance. The body is highly stylized, with long, curved arms resting on the thighs, bent legs and carefully carved feet. The elongated torso displays intricate incised patterns, while a long fibre ornament hangs from the waist. Additional fibre attachments decorate the ears and nose, and remnants of dark hair or feathers are visible on top of the head. The sculpture is carved from wood and has a deep, dark brown patina with traces of lighter pigments highlighting the facial features and body decorations. The surface shows signs of age and traditional handling, contributing to its powerful appearance. The Mindimbit area is known for its distinctive artistic traditions, in which ancestral figures and spirit representations played important roles in ceremonial life. Such carvings were associated with beliefs concerning ancestors, spiritual forces and the relationship between the living and the supernatural world. The exact ceremonial function and age of this particular figure have not been established. An exceptionally expressive example of traditional Sepik River sculpture, combining dramatic proportions, elaborate ornamentation and striking facial features. A fascinating piece for collectors of Papua New Guinea and Oceanic tribal art.
