Introductio in Analysin Infinitorum

EULER, Leonhard (1707–1783). Introductio in analysin infinitorum . Lausanne: Marcum-Michaelim Bousquet & Socios, 1748. First edition of Euler’s foundational text, the first book to define mathematical function; the Society of Writers to His Majesty’s Signet copy. “In his Introduction to Mathematical Analysis , Euler did for modern analysis what Euclid had done for ancient geometry. It contains an exposition of algebra, trigonometry and analytical geometry, both plane and solid, a definition of logarithms as exponents, and important contributions to the theory of equations” (PMM 196). Norman 732. This copy was bound for the library of Society of Writers to His Majesty's Signet, one of Scotland’s oldest professional organizations for solicitors. The covers bear the royal arms encircled by the name of the Society. The arms feature the Hanoverian royal crown (as opposed to bonnet), indicating that the two volumes were bound for the Society sometime between 1816 and 1837. Two volumes, quarto (245 × 195mm). Titles printed in red and black with engraved vignettes, with notice to bookbinders leaf, engraved frontispiece by Soubeyran after De la Monce, engraved portrait of dedicatee Jean Jacques Dortous de Mairan by Frequet after Tocquet, 40 engraved full-apron plates, folding table, woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials (vol. 1 preliminaries almost detached, toned, spotted, dampstains in pls 25 and 26, few marginal tears). 19th-century speckled calf, covers tooled in gold with outer frame and central badge of the Society of Writers to His Majesty’s Signet, spines compartment tooled in gold with crown and floral stamps and titling, edges sprayed red (boards detached save for vol. 2 lower board, spines chipped, edges rubbed); blue cloth box.
