Ionia, Kolophon Hemiobol 525-500 BC (No reserve price)

Ionia, Kolophon. 525-500 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 6.54 mm, 0.41 g). Obv: Archaic head of Apollo left. Rev: Quadripartite incuse square. Reference: SNG Kayhan I 342. SNG von Aulock 1808. Kolophon, one of the twelve cities of the Ionian League, was a prosperous center between Ephesos and Smyrna, known for trade, horses, resin, and a strong cavalry. It fostered early Greek poetry, notably through Mimnermos, and was associated with Apollo’s oracle at Klaros. Political instability and conquest, especially by Lysimachos, led to its decline and the relocation of inhabitants to Ephesos.
