IRELAND. Gun Money Crown, 1690. Dublin or Limerick Mint. James II. PCGS EF-45. S-6578; KM-103.1. Great specimen of type with chocolate-brown patina, overstruck on an earlier type. Irish "Gun Money" was a temporary, base-metal emergency currency issued by the deposed Catholic King James II between 1689 and 1691 during the Williamite War in Ireland. Lacking silver and gold to pay his army, James ordered the melting of old brass cannons, church bells, and scrap metal to mint tokens meant to be redeemed for real silver after he regained the throne. This didn't happen, though, as James II was defeated by William of Orange at the Battle of the Boyne in July 1690, where after James fled to France and the coins became worthless.
