A substantial antique Islamic - Ottoman silver signet ring with a broad, rounded rectangular bezel. Its face is engraved with flowing Arabic-script calligraphy of a devotional phrase which can be translated as ʿabduhu Murshid, meaning “His servant, Murshid”. The solid hoop expands towards the shoulders and is integrally joined to the bezel. The underside is ornamented with a distinctive radiating, faceted design. -> Signet rings served both practical and personal purposes throughout the Islamic world. They could authenticate documents and correspondence while simultaneously displaying the owner’s identity, faith or social standing. Inscriptions frequently contained names, pious invocations or protective expressions.
