Italian School, eighteenth or nineteenth century Title: Combat Scene, Sketch Technique and support: red chalk on paper Dimensions: visible image area 12 × 17 cm; with frame 30 × 35 cm Signature: unsigned Free Delivery The drawing shows a compact group of fighting and reclining figures with helmets, shields and weapons. A figure bent forward with a plumed helmet occupies a central position within this group. Bodies and equipment overlap. The composition concentrates on the bottom left; to the right and above the group there are separate studies of a leg with foot, a helmet and a small figure detail. A landscape or architectural setting is absent. Technique and material analysis The depiction is executed in red chalk on paper. Contour lines alternate with fine hatching and denser shadow areas. Variations in line thickness and tonal strength articulate body forms, drapery, and equipment. The inconspicuous paper forms the light areas. The combination of an elaborated figure group and isolated detail studies gives the sheet the character of a study drawing. Composition and form analysis The asymmetrical arrangement rests on the contrast between the densely filled lower left and the largely open upper right. Diagonal body postures, bent limbs and overlapping outlines determine the rhythm of movement. Spatial cohesion mainly arises from overlapping and localized shading. The color structure remains limited to the reddish-brown chalk tone against the light paper ground. Stylistic and art-historical context The pronounced movement, overlapping figures, and emphasis on bodily action align with a Baroque pictorial language. The helmets, shields and body gear lend the work a historicalizing character. Within the Italian School the sheet is dated to the eighteenth or nineteenth century; the formal characteristics do not provide grounds for a more precise dating or individual attribution. Comparable artists Salvator Rosa, Antonio Tempesta, Peter Paul Rubens, Charles Le Brun Condition The paper has yellowed and shows light foxing in the form of scattered small brownish spots. Conclusion This unsigned chalk drawing belongs to the Italian School of the eighteenth or nineteenth century and exhibits a Baroque formal language. The combat group and separate detail studies define the study character of the sheet. The condition is marked by paper yellowing and light foxing. The work "Combat Scene Sketch" is housed in a gilded bronze-gold wooden frame with plaster ornaments behind glass.
