SOUTHERN GERMAN SCHOOL, first half of the 19th century Portrait of a Gentleman at the Writing Desk, circa 1820–1840 Oil on panel. Half-length portrait of a gentleman seated at the writing desk, depicted in dark attire with a broad collar and a high white cravat. On the foreground plane are arranged some handwritten sheets, a quill, and an inkwell—attributes that suggest identifying the depicted person with a professional, official, or man of letters. The work presents the characteristics of bourgeois portraiture from the German-speaking area of the early nineteenth century, close to the Biedermeier culture: a neutral background, sober and restrained composition, analytic rendering of facial features, and particular attention to the subject’s individuality and social position. Notable is the characterization of the face, built through soft chiaroscuro transitions and delicate variations of skin tone. Within a gilded wooden frame decorated with bas-relief floral motifs, of early nineteenth-century taste. On the back, a viewable panel inserted into the frame structure; there are old protective elements and later metallic fastening systems. A numbered label applied to the frame. Provenance: auction, Neu-Ulm (Germany). Period: first half of the 19th century, circa 1820–1840. Scope: Southern Germany / Austro-German area, Biedermeier. Technique: pastel on paper? Author: anonymous. Note: the shape of the frame is not a perfectly regular polygon. Indicative estimate: € 700–1,500
